ALGERIA STRIVING TO ACHIEVE RAIL TRANSPORT CAPACITY OF 17 MLN TONNES CARGO, 16 MLN PASSENGERS

ALGIERS, The Algerian government is sparing no effort to achieve a railway transportation capacity of 17 million tonnes of goods and 16 million passengers by 2021, says Minister of Public Works and Transport Abdelghani Zaalane.

Speaking during an inspection of the railway station in the commune of Beni Saf, near the city of Ain Temouchent, about 490 kilometres west of here. on Wednesday, Zaalane said that achiving this goal would require linking industrial zones to the railway network “so that each kilometre becomes profitable.

Algeria’s railway network expanded from 1,800 km in 2000 to 4,200 km under the development programme of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for the country’s High Plateaus region, linking the country’s extreme east in Tebessa to Moulay Slissene in Sidi Bel Abbes, recalled the minister.

Zaalane also cited the importation of rail cars and the modernization of locomotives at the workshops of Sidi Mabrouk near Constantine and Sidi Bel Abbes. He announced that 200 rail cars will be progressively commissioned.

“We should not simply define theoretical goals but also create the conditions that ensure their achievement, particularly in the field of rail transport, especially since the road network requires major maintenance and this constitutes a heavy burden,” affirmed Zaalane.

At Beni Saf railway station, Zaalane instructed the managers of the National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) to integrate the rail line into the freight transport network, especially as the commune has a cement manufacturing plant.
