ALGERIAN. FOREIGN SCHOLARS TO ATTEND CONFERENCE ON ANCIENT BERBER KING

AIN TEMOUCHENT, ALGERIA, A large number of Algerian and foreign academics are expected to take part in the international conference on the ancient King Syphax of Algeria, to be held in Ain Temouchent, some 500 kilometres west of the capital, Algiers, next month, says the Secretary-General of the High Amazigh (Berbers ethnic group) Commission (HCA), Si Hachemi Assad.

The conference will take place from Sept 22 to 24, one day more than initially scheduled because of the high number of participants who have been registered by the HCA’s scientific committee which is in charge of selecting the academic works to be presented at this international event.

The conference is being held to shed light on the kingdom of Syphax and its historical and civilizational impact on the region, Assad told APS. Syphax was a king of the ancient Numidian tribe Masaesyli of western Numidia during the last quarter of the 3rd century BC.

Up to 27 lectures will be given by archaeologists and historians from Algerian universities and abroad.

Advisers from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and academics from France, Greece, Sudan, Tunisia and Algeria will attend the event, the HCA secretary-general said.
