ALGERIAN, FRENCH FOREIGN MINSITERS HOLD PHONE CONVERSATION AHEAD OF OCTOBER MEETINGS

ALGIERS, Algerian Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel held a telephone conversation Tuesday with France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean Yves le Drian, the Foreign Ministry ahead of bilateral meetings which they will co-chair next month.

“The talks, which are part of the tradition of bilateral consultations, allowed both foreign ministers to review ways to enhance bilateral relations in anticipation of the next meeting of the Algerian-French Joint Economic Committee (COMEFA) and the second session of the bilateral Strategic Dialogue, scheduled to take place under their co-chairmanship in Paris in October,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Both Foreign Ministers also focused on some other issues of common interest, notably the situation in the Sahel and in Libya.”

Regarding the situation in the Sahel, the two ministers stressed that the success of the presidential elections in Mali, the first round of which took place on 29 July 2018, should allow for a speeding up of the political process and national reconciliation” in that country, the statement said.

The ministers expressed the wish that the post-electoral period “could give priority to the completion of the implementation of the Peace Agreement for Mali”.

“Algeria and France will continue to support the Malian government in its strategy aimed at resolving the crisis and combating terrorism,” the statement said.

Concerning Libya, the two Ministers discussed recent developments and efforts to settle the crisis in that country. In this regard, they re-affirmed “full readiness to contribute to the completion of the United Nations process and the fulfillment of the commitments made by the Libyan parties at the Paris Conference”.

“All these efforts should allow the establishment of national institutions capable of preserving Libya’s unity, territorial integrity, national sovereignty and cohesion,” the statement said.
