ALGERIAN INDUSTRY OPERATING AT BELOW 75 PCT CAPACITY IN Q1 2018

ALGIERS, Most industrial companies in Algeria were operating at below 75 per cent capacity during the first quarter 2018, according to a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office (ONS).

According to the public and private business leaders, who have been surveyed by the ONS, industrial activity fell in the first quarter of 2018, particularly in the steel, metal, mechanical and electronic Industries (ISMMEE) sub-sector, chemical industry and the wood industries.

The demand for manufactured goods increased during the period under review, with building materials and food processing recording the highest increases, said private company leaders covered by the survey.

More than 66 per cent of the leaders of public companies and 87 per cent of those of private companies expressed satisfaction with the order s their companies received.

Raw materials were supplied in less quantity than requested, according to more than 34 per cent of the public companies and nearly 19 per cent of the private ones. Subsequently, more than 64 per cent of the public companies and nearly 40 per cent of private ones suffered stock-outs.

Concerning employment, the surveyed public company leaders said their staff levels declined while the private sector bosses reported no change.
