ALGERIAN MILK IMPORTS DROP 30 PCT TO 619 MLN USD IN FIRST NINE MONTHS
ALGIERS, – Algeria’s imports of milk powder, milk cream and milk fats dropped 29.74 per cent to 618.88 million US dollars during the first nine months of 2016 compared with the same period of 2015, according to the Algerian Customs’ National Office of Data Processing and Statistics (CNIS).
The CNIS reported Sunday that during the January-September period, Algeria imported 262,792 tonnes of these products, against 301,432 tonnes during the same period last year earlier, down by nearly 13 per cent.
The 2015 milk import bill at 372,252 tonnes worth 1.04 billion USD in turn represented a decline from 395,898 tonnes)valued at 1.91 billion USD in 2014, added the CNIS.
In order to reduce imports of these subsidized products and to promote the domestic dairy sector, the Algerian government had announced a series of measures to encourage stock breeders and professionals in the sector by increasing subsidies on the raw milk they produce and by encouraging investments.
