UGANDAN FM STRESSES CLOSE TIES WITH ALGERIA
ALGIERS, -- Ugandan Minister of International Affairs and special envoy of the Ugandan president, Henry Oryem Okello, has stressed the close relations between Algeria and his country.
"Relations between Algeria and Uganda are close and date back to the independence of the two countries," Okello told the media here Thursday following talks with Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ramtane Lamamra.
He added that the discussions with Lamamra were "very fruitful." The Ugandan Minister said he broached with Algerian officials the issue of the election of a new African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, to be held during the next summit of the pan-African organization, for which a Ugandan candidate is running for the position.
"We are here to seek Algeria's support of Uganda's candidacy," he said, adding that the chairmanship of the AU Commission was "very important."
The candidate running for the AU Commission's chairmanship "should be highly skilled and have the required abilities to better represent Africa", he added.
