MOSTAGANEM, ALGERIA, About fifty experts from 26 countries are taking part in the 70th International Congress for the Study and Improvement of Teaching of Mathematics (CIEAEM) which opened Sunday at Abdelhamid Benbadis University in Mostaganem, about 360 kilometres west of the Algerian capital, Algiers.

The congress, being held under the theme, “Mathematics and Living Together: Social Process & Didactic Principle, is jointly organized by the International Commission for the Study and Improvement of the CIEAEM, the Foundation for Sustainable Development of the Mediterranean (MEDES), and the International Association Sufi Alawia (AISA).

It is being held for the first time outside Europe and will continue until Thursday. The congress will focus on various subjects, including Mathematics and Living Together, Mathematics and Sustainable Development, Mathematics and Other Sciences, and Cross-border Mathematics and others.

Since its inception in 1950, the CIEAEM, which has its headquarters in Turin, Italy, has been working to improve the quality of mathematics education and learning.

According to the organizers, participants will highlight the contribution of Muslim scholars to the development of mathematics in the 9th Century of the Christian era in the areas of algebra, geometrics, algorithm, and the creation of numbers, which are the foundations of modern scientific and technological development.
