ALGERIA ONE OF AFRICA’S TOP PRODUCERS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

ALGIERS, Algeria, which is among the top hydrocarbons producers in Africa, has also become of the countries on the continent with the highest installed capacity for renewable energy and a major producer of such energy, the Centre for Renewable Energy Development says.

The centre said this in a statement received here Monday in reference to a report by the REN21 (Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century).

The statement noted that the total renewable energy production capacity worldwide, including hydro-electric power, increased from 2,017 gigawatts (GW) in 2016 to 2,195 GW in 2017.

China, followed by the United States, Brazil, Germany and India, are the countries with the highest cumulative installed capacity in renewable energy worldwide.

In Africa, the report said South Africa (with 1.8 GW in istalled capacity) and Algeria (about 0.4 GW) are the countries with the highest capacity as at the end of 2017.
