ALGERIA PREPARING TO INVITE TENDERS FOR TWO WATER DESLINATION PLANTS

ALGIERS, Minister of Energy Mustapha Guitouni says preparations are underway to invite for tenders next month to build two desalination plants in Algeria to serve the drinking water needs of the populations in the capital, Algiers, and in El Tarf in the northeastern corner of the country.

The Minister said Monday that the two plants, whose construction was decided in 2010, are the last two projects of a presidential programme to build 13 seawater desalination plants nationwide.

Guitouni, who was speaking during a working visit to Tipaza, 70 kilometres west of Algiers, told reporters that the government had also agreed on the building of two other deslination plants in Skikda and Bejaia.

He stressed the strategic importance of the seawater desalination plant project of Skikda, as it will supply a phosphate production complex project, made up of four phosphate processing plants and a railway connecting Skikda to Tebessa.
