ALGERIA RECORDS 9.72 PCT DROP IN IMPORTS OF SUGAR IN 2016

ALGIERS, — Algeria’s imports of sugar comprising beet sugar, cane sugar, lactose syrup and solid lactose totalled 396.15 million US dollars in the first six months of 2016, down 9.72 per cent from 438.82 million during the same period in 2015, according to the Algerian Customs’ National Centre of Data Processing and Statistics (CNIS).

The imported quantities of sugar increased slightly reaching 1.06 million tonnes against 1.05 million tonnes during the same period a year earlier, the CNIS reported here Sunday.

The drop in the import bill is because of the decline in prices of brown and white sugar on global markets.
