ALGERIAN F.M. DEPLORES U.S. DECISION TO STOO FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO UNRWA

CAIRO, Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel has deplored the decision by the United States to sto its financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Messahel, who is in Cairo to attend an Arab League Foreign Ministers Council meeting, said Tuesday that support for the UNRWA, which was created following a United Nations General Assembly resolution, “implies a legal, a political and a moral responsibility to ensure that the Palestinian refugees enjoy their rights to a dignified life and benefit from social services, especially healthcare and education”.

The Algerian Minister called for all parties to back the UNRWA “through political and financial support”.

In this respect, he stressed that Algeria “tops the list of countries supporting the budget of the Palestinian Authority, to alleviate the sufferings of our brotherly Palestinian people”.

The Palestinian refugee issue “should be settled in accordance with the resolutions of international legality, mainly the UN General Assembly Resolution 194 on the right of return for (the Palestinian) refugees” to their homes and their land on which the State of Israel has been established in 1948, stressed Messahel.
