ALGIERS, Algeria is maintaining a high level of vigilance in the fight against terrorism in view of the high-level terrorist threat in the region, says Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel.
“Algeria, a stable and secure country in a region marked by instability and a high level of terrorist threat, maintains a high-level of vigilance and is highly committed to the fight against terrorism,” Messahel added at the ninth ministerial meeting of the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF), held Wednesday in New York City where he is attending the ongoing 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement here Thursday that Messahel Algeria’s commitment to the fight against terrorism is clear from its implementation of policies, strategies and programmes of development, “guided by a strong will to relentlessly fight against the factors of exclusion, marginalization, stigmatization and social injustice, which are highly used in terrorist propaganda to recruit new members”.
Messahel also stressed the need to promote democracy, national reconciliation, de-radicalization, human rights, basic freedoms, good governance and living together in peace”.
Those principles and values, he added, are “the antidote to violent extremism and terrorism”.
