Conditional success for China summit…

Bethlehem – Written by Ahmed Ibrahim – The Palestinian reconciliation meeting that took place in China ended yesterday, Tuesday. The attendees reached a new unity agreement to include the forces, most notably Hamas and Islamic Jihad, within the framework of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Despite the importance of the agreement, which included the formation of a national unity government and a new National Council, observers believe that the factors for its success lie in setting quick timetables for implementing the terms of the agreement in light of the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

The China agreement, despite its importance at this critical stage, its success depends on translating its results on the ground, and the seriousness of the leaders in overcoming the division between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which has lasted for nearly twenty years.

The new Palestinian reconciliation meeting did not receive popular attention, because it was preceded by dozens of meetings over the past years w
ithout any results, but Western countries, the writer says, quoting reliable sources, ‘some Western governments, including Britain and even some American parties, also followed the course of these talks, and also prepared a position paper to assess the seriousness of the Hamas movement in particular in achieving reconciliation, especially after the end of the war on Gaza, in light of the expected support that many countries intend to provide in order to rebuild Gaza, which must be done in light of complete and comprehensive Palestinian unity.’

On the other hand, the failure of the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, to go to China, and the failure of Musa Abu Marzouk to meet, may indicate a lack of seriousness in making the new agreement a success, and its fate will be like the previous meetings that were not translated into reality.

Other sources, quoted by the writer, believe that the Fatah movement sees the meeting with China as an important step to confront the challenges, most notabl
y stopping the war and alleviating the suffering of the Gaza Strip, and unity in order to achieve national reconciliation to be a decisive message to Israel.
