ROAD ACCIDENTS IN ALGERIA CLAIM 1,500 LIVES IN FIRST SEVENT MONTHS OF 2018

ALGIERS, A total 1,512 people lost their lives and 8,852 others were injured in 5,076 road accidents nationwide in the first seven months of 2018, says Colonel Mouloud Guemat, head of the Road Safety Department at the National Gendarmerie Command.

Compared with the same period in 2017, the number of fatalities showed a 9.62 per cent decrease, while the number of this injured showed a drop of 19.19 per cent and the number of accidents showed a drop of 19.33 per cent, he said here Sunday.

Col. Guemat told a media briefing on the report on the national road safety awareness campaign carried out by the National Gendarmerie from July 25 to Aug 18 that the between January and July 2018, 85.22 per cent of road accidents were caused by drivers, while pedestrians were responsible for 7.31 per cent of the cases. Other causes were mechanical failure of vehicles, bad road conditions and bad weather, he added.

“The road safety awareness campaign initiated by the National Gendarmerie, has contributed to reducing the number of accidents by 19.49 per cent during the period concerned, the number of deaths by 1.6 per cent and the number of injured by 9.85 per cent, compared with the same period in 2017,” said Col. Guemat.
