PARIS, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has highlighted Algeria’s action for peace on the occasion of the the celebration, for the first time, of the International Day of Living Together in Peace which was decreed for May 16 by the UN last December at Algeria’s initiative.

Unesco Directo-General Audrey Azoulay said in a short address here Wednesday, stressed the efforts undertaken by Algeria for peace, pointing out the speech of Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, made on April 26 at Unesco, who presented Algeria’s experience in terms of living together in peace.

She underlined that living together in peace is not a utopia but a horizon of actions, adding that everyone must work for the respect of differences and mutual understanding.

Algeria’s ambassador to France and Algeria’s permanent representative at UNESCO Abdelkader Mesdoua underlined that the celebration of this day takes place on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan.

He added that this day is celebrated, on 16 May of each year, thanks to the Algerian initiative in co-operation with the International Association of Sufi Alawiya (AISA), presented at the United Nations and which was adopted on 8 December 2017.

In Algiers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized on Wednesday an official ceremony to celebrate the International Day of Living Together in Peace, chaired by Messahel, and attended by several members of the government and delegates of international organizations as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps in Algeria.
