ALGERIA SEIZES 85 TONNES OF CANNABIS RESIN IN FIRST NINE MONTHS OF 2016

ALGIERS, -- The Algerian authorities have seized almost 85 tonnes of cannabis resin, 72 per cent of the amount in western Algeria, during the first nine months of 2016, according to the National Office for the Fight against Drugs and Addiction (ONLDT).

"In total, 84,979.068 kilogrammes of cannabis resin were seized during the first nine months of 2016, including 61,185.481 kg in the western region of the country," the Office said in a report released here Tuesday, quoting reports received from the three security services responsible for combating this scourge -- the National Gendarmerie, the Police and the Customs service.

According to the report, 20.08 per cent of the total amount was seized in the southern

region, 6.19 per cent in the central region while 1.73 per cent was seized in the eastern part of the

country.

Among hard drugs, the quantity of heroin seized declined by 45.99 per cent, from 2,534.8 grammes in the first nine months of 2015 to 1,369.07 grams in the same period of 2016, while the amount of cocaine seized fell by 36.32 per cent from 85,090.48 gm in 2015 to 54,184.66 gm in the first nine months of 2016.

The ONLDT also reported a "soaring" in seizures of psychotropic tablets, which doubled from 400,737 tablets to 821,2011 tablets in the same surveyed period.
