A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the far eastern coast of Russia on Monday, but there had been no tsunami and no immediate casualties or destruction.
According to the data of the Unified Geospatial Authority of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the earthquake struck about 48 km south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Russia’s Pacific coast at a depth of 99.5 km.
Kamchatka has witnessed several earthquakes ranging from 4 to 6 in recent weeks.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it largely exposed to seismic and volcanic activity.
