House Speaker, Nabih Berri, on Tuesday met with UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, accompanied by Lebanon Director, Dorothee Klaus, at the Second Presidency in Ain al-Tineh. Discussions focused on the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon and Gaza, and UNRWA’s role amid the crisis.

For his part, Lazzarini expressed concern over the escalating conflict, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, and the growing tensions between Israel and Lebanon. He highlighted the increasing displacement on both sides of the border and emphasized the need for preparedness, while hoping to avoid further escalation.

Moreover, Lazzarini also raised concerns about continuous attacks on UNRWA and Israeli efforts to dismantle the agency, mentioning that its facilities and staff in Gaza face daily threats.

Efforts toward a ceasefire and humanitarian aid were also discussed.

Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Abdullah Bou Habib, also had an audience with Speaker Nabih Berri.

The pair discussed
the recent Israeli escalation and threats of a large-scale military operation against Lebanon.

Bou Habib expressed concern over these statements, noting that they hinder efforts to de-escalate tensions and complicate the return of displaced people on both sides of the border.

The Foreign Minister also emphasized that the best path to restoring calm and stability in southern Lebanon lies in the implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and ongoing diplomatic efforts by several nations.

Speaker Berri also received French Ambassador to Lebanon, Hervé Magro, wit whom he discussed the general situation and political developments in Lebanon and the broad region, as well as the Lebanese-French relations.
