Does artificial intelligence have a humanitarian role in times of war?

General

Through this article, I am trying to answer an important question that concerns everyone at a time when the pace of current and expected wars and the use of various technologies has escalated. Accordingly, I asked artificial intelligence about the extent to which this type of intelligence is used to serve humanity in times of war, especially at the height of its use in Israel’s raging war on Palestine. The answer was as follows:

In our modern era, the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on various aspects of life, including conflicts and wars, cannot be overlooked. AI is certainly becoming increasingly important on the battlefield, but it also raises serious questions about how this technology can be used in a humane way. While AI offers new possibilities for planning, execution, and analysis in the context of war, its heavy use in killing and torture does not give the impression that this type of intelligence has a human face, and therefore ethical questions about its impact on humanity will rem
ain.

AI technologies are increasingly being used in modern warfare, from analyzing big data to developing smart weapons systems. AI can quickly analyze data and extract patterns that may be invisible to humans, enhancing strategic decision-making and military operations. For example, AI can improve the accuracy of attacks and avoid non-military targets, which can reduce collateral damage and casualties.

But there is another side to this technology that requires special attention. In addition to the military benefits, the use of AI in warfare raises ethical and humanitarian questions. It may contribute to increased automation in warfare, reducing the need for direct human intervention, and this may lead to decisions being made based on algorithms that may not take into account basic human values.

One notable challenge is that of ‘autonomous weapons.’ These weapons, which use artificial intelligence to identify targets and carry out attacks without direct human intervention, could raise concerns about accoun
tability in armed conflict. If these weapons make mistakes or cause unexpected harm, who will be held responsible? This challenge reinforces the need for a strict legal and ethical framework to regulate the use of AI in warfare.

On the humanitarian side, AI can play a positive role in improving humanitarian response and alleviating civilian suffering. AI technologies can be used to improve early warning systems for natural disasters and humanitarian crises, allowing for better planning and response. In addition, AI can help provide healthcare and humanitarian care to affected communities, by analyzing health data and providing recommendations to doctors.

The smart thing about military uses of AI is to ensure that a balance is struck between technological progress and the preservation of human values. There must be clear controls and strict ethics governing the use of this technology to ensure that it is not used in ways that violate human rights or cause unnecessary suffering.

To address the ethical challe
nges posed by AI in warfare, states and international organizations must work together to develop legislation that ensures the responsible use of this technology. Such legislation should include clear principles on how AI should be used in armed conflict, including precise standards for minimizing collateral damage and protecting civilians. There should also be independent bodies to monitor compliance with these laws and ensure that they are effectively enforced.

Ultimately, AI is a powerful tool in warfare, but its use raises many questions about human values ??and ethics.

Technological progress must be accompanied by ethical responsibility to ensure that it does not have negative impacts on humanity. Through the development of clear legal and ethical frameworks and effective oversight, AI can contribute to improving humanitarian conditions and reducing suffering in times of conflict.

The answer, frankly, wasn’t conclusive, so I’ll need another article next week to elaborate on the ethical dimension of AI
. Let’s wait and see!
