Earthquake of 5.4 Magnitude Hits Northeastern Afghanistan

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Badakhshan Province, northeastern Afghanistan.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 28 km from Ishkashim in the region, at a depth of 224.3 km.

There have been no reports of casualties or material damage caused by the earthquake so far.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the intersection of Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
