In a celebration marking World Environment Day, the Human Environmental Association for Development (HEAD) has inaugurated the “Mediterranean Beach Clean-Up Campaign” in Jbeil.

This initiative, supported by Lebanon’s Ministries of Tourism and Environment, and in collaboration with the Municipality of Jbeil, aligns with the United Nations Environment Programme’s global campaign theme for this year, “Preserving Marine Biodiversity.”

The opening ceremony at Jbeil Port featured distinguished guests, including Minister of Tourism Walid Nassar, represented by his advisor Imad Farhat; Minister of Environment Dr. Nasser Yassin, represented by Pierre Baaklini; and various local officials and representatives from environmental and civic organizations.

HEAD President, Engineer Marie Therese Merhej Seif, highlighted the significance of World Environment Day, noting its proximity to the 15th anniversary of the association.

“For the ninth consecutive year, we launch this beach clean-up campaign, thanks to the efforts o
f our partners and supporters,” Seif said, emphasizing the organization’s ongoing commitment to environmental preservation and education.

The campaign included a diverse range of activities, from waste sorting and recycling initiatives to awareness campaigns in schools and universities. Seif also underscored the importance of addressing global environmental challenges such as desertification and climate change, noting the critical role of marine biodiversity in supporting sustainable development.

The event concluded with participants cleaning the Jbeil coastline, assisted by the Civil Defense’s marine rescue unit. Several local associations and students from various universities contributed to the effort, culminating in the sorted waste being sent to Lebanon Waste Management’s center in Jbeil for proper disposal.

Seif extended gratitude to the supporting institutions that contributed to the success of this event including the Ministry of Education and Sports in Cyprus, Mio, Legambiente, IPT, Eddé Sands, Da
