ICRC Calls for Israeli Military De-escalation

Geneva, The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) called on Sunday for Israeli military de-escalation in the Gaza Strip.

“I am shocked by the intolerable level of human suffering and urge the parties to the conflict to de-escalate now,” ICRC president Mirjana Spoljaric said.

“It is unacceptable that civilians have no safe place to go in Gaza amid the massive bombardments,” she added.

“There is also no adequate humanitarian response currently possible. This is a catastrophic failing that the world must not tolerate,” Spoljaric said. The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) had earlier expressed its rejection of the Israeli authorities’ attempt to forcibly displace the residents of the Gaza Strip and giving them 24 hours to leave to the southern part of the territory. This action, in the context of a siege that deprives them of food, water, and electricity, is not in line with international humanitarian law.
