Washington, Meta announced its intention to allow Instagram users to turn off read receipts for direct messages.

The company published an example showing an option in the privacy and security menu for Instagram direct messages that allows read receipts to be turned off, with its intention to expand the scope of the option to include other messaging tools it owns.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement through his Meta Channel on Instagram.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared screenshots of the upcoming feature.

“You asked, we listened. We heard your feedback and have started testing a new feature that lets you turn read receipts off in your DMs. Soon, people will be able to choose when to let others see when they’ve read their messages,” Mosseri said.
