MIKATI HOLDS LOCAL AND DIPLOMATIC MEETINGS, CONFIRMS ATTENDANCE AT PATRIARCH DOUAIHY’S BEATIFICATION CEREMONY

Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Tuesday held a series of diplomatic meetings at the Grand Serail.

Mikati first met with US Ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson, with whom he discussed the latest political developments and the situation in southern Lebanon.

The Prime Minister then met with Australian Ambassador, Andrew Barnes, accompanied by Prime Minister’s Advisor Ambassador Petros Assaker. The meeting reportedly discussed bilateral relations and regional issues.

Mikati also received Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun, who briefed him on the security situation in the country and the outcomes of his recent visit to the United States.

The Prime Minister then met with Acting General Security Director, Major General Elias Baisari, with whom he reviewed the security situation. Baisari also briefed Mikati on his recent visit to Syria and the discussions held regarding the return of Syrian refugees.

Mikati finally welcomed Bishop Joseph Naffah, the Patriarchal Vicar for Jebbeh and Bsharri-Zgharta, l
eading a delegation from the committee responsible for the beatification of Patriarch Estefan Douaihy. The delegation included Monsignor Estefan Franjieh, Father Youssef Tannous, Father Paul Kazzi, and Captain Joseph Raidi.

After the meeting, Bishop Naffah stated, “We were honored to meet with Prime Minister Mikati and extended an invitation from Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi, the parish of Ehden-Zgharta, and the beatification committee to attend the beatification ceremony on August 2 in Bkerke. We are delighted that Prime Minister Mikati confirmed his attendance and expressed hope that this beatification will bring blessings to Lebanon and its people. This event will also be an opportunity for the participation of the diaspora. We hope that the blessings of our saints will bring peace to Lebanon and usher in better days.”
