Ministry of Environment Strengthens Oversight on Facilities Using Radioactive Materials

General

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) strengthened the oversight over facilities using radioactive materials, in addition to detecting radiation levels and ensuring that they remain within safe limits, under the framework of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through the development of a number of advanced radiation detection devices.

The new devices raise the capabilities of the Radiation Control Department at the MoECC in the areas of radiation safety and security by detecting and determining the location of radioactive materials, as well as the quality and quantity of radiation emitted by them through measurement in technically advanced methods.

This step also reflects the department’s commitment to modernizing monitoring methods to keep pace with the latest technical developments in that field, which enhances the department’s work in inspection and radiation safety, ensuring the safety of medical, industrial, and research facilities’ use of radioactive
materials and radiation-emitting devices for peaceful uses within the State of Qatar and their commitment and adherence to the legal provisions included in Law No. 31 of 2002 on radiation protection and its executive regulations.

MoECC’s cooperation with the IAEA comes as one of the joint programs within the frame of reference for planning technical cooperation between the State of Qatar and the IAE, which was signed in 2022 and runs until 2027. The frame of reference also includes a number of other aspects, including training programs, exchange of experiences, enhancing technical capabilities, and calibrating radiation detection and monitoring equipment and supplies.

The MoECC, represented in the Radiation Control Department, intensifies its oversight over radioactive materials and radiation-emitting devices used in all peaceful fields of nuclear energy in medicine, agriculture, industry, research, and others.
