Casablanca – The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, emphasized on Tuesday in Casablanca, Morocco’s emergence as a leader in sustainable development and energy efficiency, due to the nation’s steadfast commitment to these fields over the past two decades.
Benali said that Morocco is actively engaged in various sustainable projects, particularly in the solar and wind power sectors. The country aims to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development objectives and transitioning towards a decarbonized economy, she said in a speech read on her behalf by Mohammed Ouhmed, Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, at the 9th edition of the African Energy Efficiency Meetings.
Addressing the event themed “Sustainable development and buildings: innovations, labeling, and financing,” Benali expressed the Ministry’s intent to increase the annual energy production rate. This effort aims to extend acce
ss to the energy grid to remote communities. She elaborated on ongoing work involving battery storage systems and energy transfer technologies to achieve this goal.
“The energy sector is evolving rapidly, and we are striving for a low-carbon energy footprint”, noted Benali, stressing that the current context is sending strong signals to industry about the importance of energy efficiency.
Regarding the hydrogen dossier, she stressed the necessity of a robust regulatory framework and appropriate infrastructure to facilitate sectoral development. Benali highlighted Morocco’s initiative to revitalize hydrogen development through experimental projects aimed at reducing electricity consumption.
