Rabat – In a resolute display of commitment to border security and regional stability, Morocco successfully foiled 75,184 attempts of irregular migration in 2023, marking a 6% increase from the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of the Interior.

The Kingdom, facing a persistent surge in migratory pressure amid an unstable regional environment, employed its robust border and coastal surveillance systems to counter irregular migration. These efforts highlight Morocco’s dedication to managing the challenges posed by migration in a collective and comprehensive manner.

Trafficking networks, a constant concern, showed no signs of abating, with the ministry revealing the dismantling of over 419 networks, a staggering 44% increase compared to 2022. These criminal entities continually adapt their strategies, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach in tackling transborder criminal activities.

In the realm of sea rescue and assistance operations, the ministry disclosed that 16,818 migrants were rescued
, representing a notable 35% uptick from the previous year. These individuals received essential support, including medical assistance, accommodation, and guidance, as part of Morocco’s commitment to humane border management.

The presidios of Sebta and Melilla, critical points of contention, experienced six assaults involving more than 1,400 migrants, showcasing a commendable 62% decrease from 2022. Additionally, 5,844 irregular migrants opted for voluntary returns to their countries of origin, facilitated with respect for their rights and dignity in coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and diplomatic legations-an increase of 62% compared to the previous year.

Morocco’s tireless efforts underscore its pivotal role in regional security and combating transborder trafficking networks. The nation’s solidarity with its international partners reflects a commitment to addressing the complex challenges associated with migration through a collaborative lens.

Amid these responsibiliti
es, Morocco prioritizes the human aspect, placing it at the forefront of its concerns. Guided by the vision of HM King Mohammed VI, the country initiated a National Immigration and Asylum Strategy, signaling a paradigm shift in migration governance.

This strategy, implemented with a human-centered approach, resulted in the successful integration of more than 50,000 migrants in irregular stay in Morocco during operations in 2014 and 2016, predominantly hailing from sub-Saharan African countries.
