Tangier – Morocco’s Tangier-Med port handled 8.6 million containers in 2023, or 95% of its nominal capacity, Managing Director of Tangier-Med Port Authority (TMPA), Hassan Abkari, said Thursday in Tangier.

‘Last year, we reached a record of 8,617,410 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), a 13.4% increase compared to 2022,’ Abkari told MAP, noting that Tangier-Med surpassed Algeciras port, which handled around 4.7 million containers.

Regarding other port activities, Abkari highlighted the positive developments in all segments, notably vehicle exports which reached nearly 600,000 units in 2023, up 21% compared to the previous year, adding that these results reflect Morocco’s industrial capacity and its capability to export ‘Made in Morocco’ vehicles.

Ro-ro traffic also grew by 4.11% compared to 2022, through handling some 477,993 TIR trucks, he pointed out.
