Nationwide Building Permits in May Surge by 98 Percent

Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) issued 758 building permits during the month of May 2023, an increase of 98 percent compared to 383 in April 2023.

A statement from the PSA on Sunday showed that the increase was noted in all of the municipalities: Al Shammal (300 percent), Um Slal (240 percent), Al Sheehaniya (130 percent), Al Da’ayen (127 percent), Al Wakrah (101 percent), Al Doha (89 percent), Al Rayyan (83 percent), and Al Khor (26 percent).

According to their geographical distribution, municipality of Al Rayyan comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building permits issued were 187 permits, i.e. 25 percent of the total issued permits, while municipality of Al Doha came in second place with 168 permits, i.e. 22 percent, followed by Al Wakrah municipality with 165 permits, i.e.22 percent, then municipality of Al Da’ayen with 109 permits, i.e.14 percent.

The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Um Slal 51 permits (7 percent) Al khor 43 permits (6 percent), Al Sheehaniya 23 permits (3 percent), and finally Al Shammal 12 permits (2 percent).

In terms of type of permits issued, data indicates that the new building permits (residential and non-residential) constitutes 40 percent (302 permits) of the total building permits issued during the month of May 2023, while the percentage of additions permits constituted 58 percent (442 permits), and finally fencing permits with 2 percent (14 permits).

By analyzing new residential buildings permits data, we find that villas’ top the list, accounting for 84 percent (203 permits) of all new residential buildings permits, followed by apartments buildings permits by 8 percent (19 permits) and dwellings of housing loans permits by 7 percent (17 permits).

On the other hand, commercial buildings were found to be in the forefront of non-residential buildings permits with 48 percent (29 permits), followed by industrial buildings e.g., workshops/factories with 28 percent (17 permits), then governmental buildings with 13 percent (8 permits).

Building permits and building completion certificates recorded an increase of 83 percent versus April 2023 with 464 certificates. The increase was in Al Doha (200 percent), Al Shammal (167 percent) Al Wakrah (144 percent), Al Sheehaniya (114 percent), Al Rayyan (55 percent), Al Da’ayen (46 percent), and Um Slal (29 percent). Al Khor remained unchanged.

According to their geographical distribution, municipality of Al Rayyan comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building completion permits issued were 116 permits, i.e. 25 percent of the total issued permits, while municipality of Al Wakrah came in second place with 105 permits, i.e. 23 percent, followed by Al Da’ayen 86 percent permits, i.e. 19 percent, municipality of Al Doha with 84 permits, i.e. 18 percent, then municipality of Um Slal with 31 permits, i.e. 7 percent, Al Khor with 16 permits, i.e. 3 percent, and Al Shammal and Al Sheehaniya with 13 permits each, i.e 3 percent.

In terms of the type of certificates issued, the data indicated that the number of new building completion certificates (residential and non-residential) constituted 81 percent (374 certificates) of the total building completion certificates issued during May 2023, while certificates of completion of building additions accounted for 19 percent (19 percent) 90 certificates.

By analyzing new residential buildings completion certificates data, we find that villas’ top the list, accounting for 87 percent (251 certificates) of all new residential building’s completion certificates, followed by apartments buildings by 8 percent (24 certificates), then dwellings of housing loans certificates by 5 percent (14 certificates).

The commercial buildings were found to be in the forefront of non-residential buildings completion certificates with 61 percent (52 certificates), followed by industrial buildings e.g., workshops and factories with 21 percent (18 certificates), then mosques with 8 percent (7 certificates).

Building permits and building completion certificates data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.

The release of this monthly data comes under the joint cooperation between the Planning and Statistics Authority and the Ministry of Municipality to make use of the existing electronic link between the two sides.
