Officials in Nepal announced Sunday that heavy rains caused landslides and floods, resulting in the death of at least 11 people over the past two days, and also led to the closure of major highways.
A police spokesperson said that eight people are still missing, either swept away by torrents or buried in landslides, while 12 others were injured and require treatment in hospitals.
Rescue teams are striving to remove the effects of landslides, open roads, and use heavy equipment to remove the rubble.
Several rivers burst Kathmandu’s banks, submerging roads and many houses, given that the capital is surrounded by hills.
Hundreds die every year as a result of landslides and torrents that frequently occur in mountainous Nepal during the monsoon season, which usually begins in mid-June and continues until mid-September.
