The number of flood victims in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the south of Brazil, has risen to 113 dead, in addition to 146 people missing, authorities in Brazil said on Friday.

The storms and floods that struck the southernmost state in Brazil, inhabited by about 10.9 million people, displaced more than 337,000 people and caused power outages for several days in tens of thousands of homes.

Heavy rains also damaged more than 200 areas in Rio Grande do Sul, and destroyed many roads, bridges and dams.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had pledged to provide significant support for rescue and reconstruction efforts in the state.

Rio Grande do Sul was hit last September by a tropical cyclone that caused floods, killing more than 50 people.
