Sabbagh: Syria affirms full cooperation with OPCW, condemns use of chemical weapons

Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, said that Syria condemns the use of chemical weapons at any time or place, by anyone and under any circumstance, adding that Syria affirms full cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical weapons (OPCW) and fully implement all its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Ambassador Sabbagh added at UN Security council session on “the chemcial file in Syria” that the Technical Secretariat of the OPCW continues its biased and unprofessional approach with the Syrian case and it focuses on the obligations while ignoring the rights.

“Syria will continue working openly with OPCW despite the deviation of its Technical Secretariat from the impartial and technical track,” Sabbagh said.

The Ambassador added that despite its constant emphasis on the need for the “fact-finding mission” to reform its work methods, address the serious defects in it, and make its reports professional and impartial, Syria has continued to cooperate with the mission, received its teams, and provided it with possible facilities and assistance to make its mission a success.

He stressed that the responsibility for correcting the track of the technical secretariat of the OPCW lies on the states parties to the convention, so that the secretariat returns to its former status to be an impartial tool for the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
