In a press conference held at his office in the Ministry on Thursday, Caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade, Amin Salam, addressed the issue of Qatari alternative energy facilities.

“We titled this press conference ‘Correcting the Compass’ symbolizing our effort to lead the country out of the current political deadlock. When we talk about the issue of electricity generation facilities in the country, and given the attempts to obstruct this effort, we refuse to stand idly by as mere spectators lighting a candle in this darkness. We, in the Ministry of Economy, are not here for spectacles or clashes; we are simply conveying a message that has been relevant for a year and a half to all Lebanese officials,’ Salam said.

“In January 2023, a contract was signed for oil exploration with Total and Qatar Energy in the presence of the Lebanese government, the Prime Minister, the Qatari Minister of Energy, and other officials. In the same month, it was announced that the companies involved would execute alternative e
nergy projects in Lebanon,’ the Economy Minister added.

Speaking about his visit to Qatar in October 2023, Salam emphasized the importance of energy in Lebanon’s economy, noting that unfortunately, the impact is mostly negative. He highlighted the need to seize the opportunity offered by Qatar to rescue Lebanon from darkness, emphasizing that the Qatari leadership wants to assist Lebanon, and it is up to Lebanon to respond appropriately.

Salam criticized the delays and obstacles faced by the country, stating, “We have been hearing talk for a year and a half now. The entire Lebanese state is obstructed, and when I say that, I don’t accept being a mere spectator. There is a vital issue, and we are in a polluted country due to widespread generators. We do not want to breathe toxins.”

Salam finally urged swift action, emphasizing that the government and parliament must enact the necessary laws and regulations to move forward with the project, stating, “Enough political disputes; let’s shed light and emerge fro
m the darkness.”
