Tunisia reports 20,000 new cancer cases every year: AMOP

TUNIS— Tunisia reports each year 20,000 new cancer cases, Secretary General of the Association of Private Oncologists (AMOP) Chiraz ben Ayed said on Saturday, specifying that cancer is the second cause of death in Tunisia after cardiovascular diseases.

Ben Ayed indicated in a statement to TAP on the fringes of the AMOP two-day scientific congress in Hammamet, that cancer is on the rise in the world, adding that the causes of cancer are multiple, notably climate change, high pollution, lifestyle, inactivity, smoking and genetically modified foods.

She pointed out in another connection, that the meeting which is attended by about 180 specialists from the public and private sectors and several guests from Algeria, Morocco, Spain and France, is an important opportunity for participants to learn about the latest scientific developments in the oncology field, particularly at the level of medical practice.

Ben Ayed laid emphasis on the keenness of the AMOP and all the public sector practitioners to increase coordination at the level of cancer care (care costs), monitoring of scientific advances and the development of legislation aimed at ensuring the best health care for all Tunisians in the public and private sectors.
