Typhoon Duxuri: 16 People Killed in Philippines, Hundreds of Thousands Displaced in China

Typhoon Duxuri has killed dozens in China and the Philippines, displaced hundreds of thousands and destroyed many homes and agricultural lands.

In the Philippines, 16 people died and more than a million were affected due to the powerful typhoon and the southwest monsoon.

The Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday that 20 people were lost and another 52 injured due to the weather disturbances that also forced over 30,000 people to flee their homes.

The combined effects of the typhoon and the southwest monsoon also caused havoc in the agricultural sector, with more than 105,000 farmers and fishermen affected.

Meanwhile, initial damage to the country’s infrastructure was estimated at 4.3 billion pesos (USD78.3 million).

In China, over 300,000 people were evacuated from Fujian Province, and more than 140,000 others were moved to safer areas, Xinhua News Agency cited officials who added that more than 6,333 hectares of farmland had been damaged, of which more than 151 hectares had been destroyed.

They added that 44 houses collapsed and 178 others were severely damaged, causing direct economic losses of 428 million yuan (USD 5.99 million).
