UEFA to Implement Communication Rule Between Team Captain and Referee in All Its Tournaments

Nyon, The European Football Association (UEFA) on Friday announced that the rule of limiting speech in matches between referees and team captains, which is applied in the European Championship (Euro 2024) currently being held in Germany, will be applied in all UEFA tournaments, starting next season.

In a statement on Friday, the UEFA praised the success of the rule that stipulates that any player other than the team captain receives a yellow card when he objects to the referees decisions. This rule reflects another approach that the International Federation of Association Football (IFAB) is trying to implement in order to improve players’ behavior towards the referees.

The new system will be applied to men’s and women’s competitions in the new season 2024/25 UEFA said in its statement that the success of this rule and public opinions welcome of it enhances confidence in moving forward on the path of fair play and the values that represent football, the most popular game in the world, which must be transferr
ed to our societies.

It added that, starting next season, this will be applied to the UEFA tournaments, which kick off next week, and this will be extended to include all UEFA’s tournaments. If the captain is the goalkeeper, the teams will have to nominate one player from the team to communicate with the referee.
