Upper House Deputy Speaker Meets with Chairman of Standing Committee of National People’s Congress of China

The first deputy Speaker of the House of Councillors Mohamed Hanine held on Friday in Rabat, talks with the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China Zhao Leji, currently on a working visit in the Kingdom leading a delegation of high-level officials.

This meeting was an opportunity for both parties to highlight aspects of Sino-Moroccan cooperation and ways to raise them to the level of political relations between the two brotherly countries under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI and Chinese President Xi Jinping, said a statement of the House of Councillors.

On this occasion, Hanine reviewed the historical and symbolic dimensions of Leji’s visit, the first abroad after his election as chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, noting that this trip reflects the depth of the distinguished relations and the multidimensional strategic partnership between the two friendly countries.

In this sense, he expressed the pride of the members of the House of Councillors of the various aspects of cooperation and solidarity between Morocco and China in several areas including the fight against the coronavirus and the strengthening of economic and trade ties, expressing the willingness to achieve more progress in harmony with the good bilateral political relations in favor of the great interest granted by HM the King to the consolidation of relations with China.

Hanine reaffirmed Morocco’s constant position of Morocco in favor of respect for the sovereignty of China and the preservation of its regional security and territorial integrity, in harmony with Morocco’s foreign policy based on the diversification of regional and international partners and the fight against separatist movements.

In this context, the Upper House deputy speaker stressed that Morocco continues to work to find a political and final settlement to the artificial dispute over the Moroccan Sahara through the autonomy plan, welcoming in this regard China’s position at the Security Council on this issue and its action for peace and security in the region.

Hanine stressed that Morocco wants to attract more Chinese investment to meet the economic challenges that are necessary, expressing the willingness to strengthen bilateral parliamentary cooperation.

For his part, Zhao Leji welcomed the Sino-Moroccan friendship thanks to the strategic leadership of the leaders of the two countries, highlighting the importance to enshrine mutual political trust as a fundamental basis for the development of bilateral relations.

In this sense, the Chinese official welcomed Morocco’s positions on the main issues of his country and its supreme interests, expressing China’s commitment to the defense of the Kingdom’s unity, security and stability as well as support for its efforts to achieve economic and social development.

He stressed that China understands Morocco’s position regarding territorial integrity through the adoption of an objective position that supports dialogue between all parties concerned.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of continuing joint action in different areas, and strengthening parliamentary cooperation and human and cultural ties, noting that his country supports the presence of Chinese companies in the Moroccan economic fabric.
